I’m from Canada, and I’ll be traveling in the states for half a year. I have a Visa credit card from CIBC, and is it true that if I use it in the states, the bank will charge me crazy conversion rates from CDN to USD? I would like to avoid the high conversion rates, and was wondering what would be the best way to use my credit card. Is there something like a USD account I can setup on my Visa card where I can put USD money in, and my Visa charges will take it from there? What is the best way for a Canadian to travel in USD in terms of money.

According to all the reading I have been doing, it looks bringing plastic is the best way to keep your money (vs travelers checks, etc). I was in Mexico over Christmas break and used my check card at a restaurant and was charged a $3 ‘money conversion fee. With the rate at which the dollar is trading against the euro I don’t want to be hit with this every time I pull money out of the atm or use my card to purchase something over there. Is there a bank that doesn’t charge this?
