At a huge corporation, who tells the collection agency how fast they have to collect the money?

The situation: Basically I owe a bunch of money to my old employer because I took a lot of classes within a years period of time and all the money they gave me for the classes were required to be paid back (because i left before the required one year of retention time). They sent the debt to collections and now the collections agency is trying to pressure me into paying HUGE payments or else they’ll report the debt to my credit report. Is there someone I can contact within the corporation to have them contact the collection agency on my behalf? Thanks.
